NLP & the Psychology of Violence

A 3 cd auditory program By Richard Grannon

It seems to me, that these days everyone and their sister are practitioners of NLP. There is a myriad of books, cdí s and courses available on the market, all geared toward enhancing your ability to communicate more effectively, build rapport with just about anyone and model the behaviour of those who excel at the highest level. The majority of Neuro Linguistic Programming material available is aimed at gaining success in business, personal relationships, sporting endeavours, infact basically any field can be enhanced in some way via the methods of accelerated learning technologies that NLP can offer. Now I am not going to go into the dynamics of what NLP is, if you donít already know, then where have you been?

At the very least I suggest you buy a simple book from any good bookshop, read it then apply it in some way to your life at every opportunity. Bottom line is that NLP can provide you with simple strategies that can enhance your ability to communicate, build rapport, understand the way you represent yourself to the world and the way in which the world is represented to you, among other nuggets of greatness. Will all this said, you will find that any specific NLP material relating to Self-Protection or understanding ways in which we can use it, to counter violence and aggression, is indeed extremely thin on the ground. There are plenty of really good articles available on the internet relating to NLP and Combatives or as its often referred to in this context, Neural Based Training, penned by some of the top people in our field, the likes of Marcus Wynne, Darren Laur and Dennis Martin to name just a few. I have compiled a thick file on such material. But suggest to anyone in this field just how useful it would be to write a book or some kind of instructional guide, for those Self Protection instructors and practitioners out there who would like to apply it in their teaching and training, or simply for the people who are lacking in confidence of their ability to apply their skills in a physical sense, those who could really use some advice on how to reframe their perspective during a potentially violent confrontation. Suggest such an instructional for commercial purchase and suddenly everyone wants to sit on such knowledge as if itís the Holy Grail.

But the fact is such information applied to the field of combat, is simply a bunch of shared and practiced ideas from like minded people who have come to similar conclusions via similar experience. Bottom line is NLP was developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder and has since been publicised and practiced by great personalities such as Paul McKenna and the like, then some great Combative minds have gone to these guys seeking knowledge and instruction to a masters proficiency, some of which are now starting to make it available to the likes of you and me. This being the case, imagine just how elated I was to find out that two such individuals, namely Richard Grannon and Bob Spour are working to fill this gap in the market. Both Bob and Richard provide instructional courses on NLP in general along with specific programs for students of Self-Protection.

They have also; between them both produced some quality DVD and CD instructionals that certainly reinforce their teaching for anyone who has attended their seminars as well as providing an excellent and immediate workable method of learning, for those who havenít as yet been able to attend any of their programs. One such learning tool that I would like to big up, plug, call it what you like, right here is Richard Grannoní s excellent 3 CD auditory program

NLP and the Psychology of Violence.

First there is the convenience of listening to such a program at your leisure on CD as you drive your car or when relaxing at home listening on your CD player or MP3, whatever. For me I am an auditory learner to a large degree, yes I, like a lot of people learn well from visual/kinaesthetic or seeing and feeling, but for me I also like to listen, hence the reason I like CDís and books as learning tools.† In regards to content, well I canít be seen to be giving you the in and outs now can I? For that I would have to say simply, buy them! For the price youíre paying for the information youíre getting, Iíve got to say youíre getting pure gold. I will however give you the dynamics of what this 3 disc set has to offer.

The overall objective of the course is to give the listener an understanding of how they can apply some of the techniques and strategies of NLP to their Self-Protection training. This overall application is delivered more from a conceptual or principle based approach, rather than specifics technical aspects. The program starts with the common NLP principle that suggests how Ďíthe Map is not the Territoryíí †Here Richard explains how we tend to allow certain situations to represent themselves to us, based on how we picture them in our own minds (perspective) and just as importantly, how we and others, describe such situations in terms of language or communication and how we can manipulate pictures and description to reframe, for a more productive outcome in relation to such SP issues. The course continues by looking at your perspective or perception of events, during the onset of a potentially violent confrontation. Here we look at ways that we can reframe such events in our mind, before, during and post-event in order to produce a more successful outcome.

In addition to this Richard talks about the importance of State Access and Management i.e. putting your mind and your physiology where it needs to be for the brief duration of a violent event, in order to obtain a successful conclusion to counter violence. Visualisation or mental imagery for the worse-case scenario violent event is also addressed. I really like the progression employed here, how one should start with associated rehearsal that is, seeing it through your own eyes, seeing what you would see, hearing what you would hear and feeling what you would feel.

Then playing out a scenario in your head in slow motion making everything perfect such as control of emotions, perfect target acquisition, flowing and adapting to a successful conclusion to the event, then progressing the exercise into real time at full speed and power, with State Access and a Controlled explosion of Aggression, backed up with Tenacious Resolve.

Such mental rehearsal can really switch on that primal, shotgun that is better kept under the overcoat that is until itís called for.

Thatís why Richard suggests balancing out such practice with more positive Visualisation, that of successfully talking a situation down without the need for the physical as just one example. Thatís just a taste, more specific than I intended at the start of this review, but I tend to get a little carried away as most of you will know from my previous reviews, they tend to end up epics. Suffice to say that Iím sure you get the gist of just how useful and unique this program is.

Iím sure others in the future will jump on the wagon and produce similar material, which is a good thing as even though I have myself studied these topics to a fair degree of understanding, when you listen to someone elseís take on it, it kind of rekindles your enthusiasm for the material, which is applied NLP in itself. As far as I know Richard is the first to produce such a program this specific to Combative issues and I must say he does it well.

The varied voice tonality, examples of past experiences, analogies, quotes and depictions from film along will a good dose of humour, make the program both productive and enjoyable to listen to. I whole heartedly recommend this work to students and instructors alike as well as those for whom it is really intended, those of you who really need to reframe the way you think about dealing with violence, in a more positive and beneficial light. Get your hands on it now!
